Notes from The Field, 8.17.2009 The awe inspiring Redmoon production team loaded into our South Belmont Harbor location today. Led by the brave and intelligent Adam Fox, an unbelievably tall ladder machine, a 26-foot tall boat, and a quarter of a “moon” are hauled across the green field to a cove in the trees and rested in front of a chunk of Chicago sky. Just a portion of the materials for our massive event are relocated from Redmoon Central to South Belmont Harbor. The day was filled with rumbling trucks, brief cigarette breaks, heavy rain, endless walking, tireless pushing, hard shoving, limitless dragging, and exhausting hammering. The kind of work only accomplished by a great production leader and a good team. 10 men move a spectacle from one destination to another. A strange miracle. In the evening 45 performers come to the space to experiment with long entrances and lyrical exits. The excellent Vanessa Stalling leads them through winding trees, over the crisp blue horizon, across lime green fields, over green heaps of earth. The performers parade with elaborate 2 dimensional instruments (40 violins, and another 40 orchestra tools- cellos, tubas, trombones… the list goes on), weird and wild masks (dozens of over sized heads of cartoon women, handsome men, bizarre infants, dapper weirdo’s, cranky hags), and most important, strange mechanical land vehicles (ladder machines, immense boats, drum tanks, gramophone carts)… all stunning and awesome in our currently limited and harsh light. The sound of the expressway whispered behind us. Everyone was hard at work. There was nothing but commitment on that field. And Hope. And Belief. An enormous team all concentrated on a shared mission- make a dynamic, beautiful, large, wild, muscular, poetic experience for our audience. Transform this Harbor site; transform our audience, change our city- if only for a moment. With odd humor, majestic images, celebratory song and dance, outrageous cartoon, and simple and careful sky ballet we strive towards magic, wonder, and myth. The mission is clear. We carry it in our eyes, our walk, our speech. We have been working on Species for several months, and now the real propulsion has begun- Rebecca leads with an clarity that is praiseworthy, Vanessa works 24 hours a day, Angie carefully attends to the many aesthetic challenges that interns are delivered, Jim provides notes that expose his skill in the spectacle discipline… intensive rehearsals, massive build, viral video clips, newspaper ads, postcards, interviews, facebook updates, photo shoots… all happening at once- like a comet hurling to earth- full of fire and focus and speed. The number of people engaged in the work, many volunteer, is staggering. 10 object and vehicle designers, an 8 person production team, 14 build shop interns, 40 ensemble performers, 20 percussion musicians, 5 graphic designers, the committed Redmoon administrative team, and the tireless core artistic team. Close to 100 makers, movers, and managers. All striving to the same things- aesthetic arrest, public engagement, ephemera wonder. To create a live event in a authentic Chicago location that is stunning in its images, its elements, its subject matter and its themes. The work of spectacle is simply hard- physically hard, at times cruel and brutal, the work of mad people… but all this labor is almost immediately extinguished as bikers, runners, and others stop to talk about what is happening and what they are seeing at South Belmont Harbor… in one evening, with rain misting the field, the humidity cranking, and the bugs aplenty, people stop and talk, curious, excited, eager, engaged with what we are doing here. The name Redmoon excites. Much discussion of “oh I remember when you guys…” and “I love when you guys…”- all this affirms, for me, our place in the consciousness of our city. And this provides us increased clarity, and more inspiration, and a strange relief, and, most important, deeply invigorates our mission- create unexpected theater in unexpected places. We are doing it… the impossible and the beautiful. Muscle and Poetry. Something few can do, let alone imagine. We are constructed not only a surprising event, but a social opportunity. An opportunity for our public to gather together, in a beautiful space, and pleasure, for a brief and ephemeral time, in their imaginations and in their immediate and spontaneous community. The event will be unexplainable, wild, surreal, magical and meaningful. Everyone is doing the hard work of hopeful event creation. One day on site down. Many more to come. I remind myself, when arriving home to my wife, missing her greatly, the babies softly asleep- We, Redmoon, are privileged to do this hard work. It is an honor to create such celebration. And for the core artists of the theater, a responsibility. We choose to create wonder, to spread reckless imagination, to be bombastic. Its our mission. Our vocation.
